Ex-MEGADETH Bassist ELLEFSON Likes To Combine Heaviness With Good Songwriting

Former MEGADETH and current F5 bassist David Ellefson recently spoke to RockhouseMethod.com about his early musical influences and his experiences as a professional musician. Asked what his worst gig nightmare was, Ellefson replied, "I had a gig with MEGADETH in '85 in St. Louis one time when my 18-inch cabinet caught on fire. There was literally fire coming out of it. We had to stop the show. That kind of sucked. I remember another gig we played in this small little venue and I was real sick and had a high fever and the last thing that I wanted to do was go on stage and play brutally punishing metal. Image yourself at your sickest and now you have to go out and tear it up and head bang and jam. It was horrible."

With regards to what he listens to now for inspiration and enjoyment, David said, "I listen to EVANESCENCE, VERTICAL HORIZON, DISTURBED, GODSMACK, MATCHBOX TWENTY, and LAMB OF GOD. I'm pretty diverse. I love great songwriters and all things Ozzfest. I like when you can marry the two — that you can just be brutally heavy, but also still write a really good song, because most really good songwriters can't be heavy, and most really heavy guys can't really write a killer song."
